Founded in 2011, Michael Robbins is a small handmade furniture company in the Hudson Valley. Distinguishable by their exceptional quality and evolving design, Michael and his team create made-to-order pieces that pay homage to the materials and surroundings of his native landscape.

TEAM

  • Michael Robbins

    PRINCIPAL

Born and raised in rural Central New York, Robbins grew up in a house he watched his parents build. After pursuing a formal education in photography, he walked the path of a carpenter and spent most of his twenties living off the grid building houses in Vermont and New Mexico.

Largely self taught, Robbins has a deep love for big empty spaces and wild terrain. It is this sense of adventure that fuels Robbins' vision of creating furniture that is both formal and meaningful with each line rooted in beauty and necessity.

Acknowledgment for his residential and commercial furnishings has been featured in publications such as The New York Times, Architectural Digest, Elle Decor, Interior Design, Dwell, and Fine Woodworking.

  • Emily Costello

    STUDIO DIRECTOR

Originally from Rochester, Emily found themselves living in Philadelphia for over 11 years but made their way back to the state of NY in 2022. With a background as a business owner, interior design education, furniture fabrication, and art, it seemed only natural that they would join the Michael Robbins team in early 2023.

When not at the Studio or Showroom, Emily is probably enjoying a sci-fi audiobook and working on a furniture project of their own, or weather permitting, digging around in their garden.

  • Roger French

    SHOP FOREMAN

Arguably, Roger's patience and careful consideration of his work are unmatchable. With degrees in Woodworking and Furniture from RIT and Metalworking from Clark, he has been a vital part of Michael Robbins since nearly the beginning.

With fifteen years of experience, it is evident that each piece of furniture expresses his growth in craftsmanship. His enthusiasim for creating is not only seen at work but found at home in the form of house projects, gardens, and bicycle corral.

  • Adam Foote

    PRODUCTION MANAGER

Hailing from Atlanta, Georgia, Adam relocated to Hudson Valley to join the Michael Robbins team in 2022. His bachelor’s in History provides a unique viewpoint to his expertise as a furniture maker; each project is an opportunity to create something long-lasting, not hastily made and quickly forgotten.

Adam’s years of experience are undoubtedly important, but his most crucial job may be as the dog dad of our number-one supporting team member, Ekho.

  • Stu Dorris

    BUILDER

Stu has come a long way since selling some of the first cell phones in 1994; for over two decades, he has established skillsets that few can claim. For five years, he was the farm manager of an organic seed company, moved on to be a founding member of a co-op landscaping business, and then a co-owner and hop grower of 12 Moon Hops. For a year and a half, Stu led youth adjudicated by the juvenille justice system on month-long wilderness trips to help them rebuild trust, empathy, and self-esteem. Furthermore, he has been a carpenter, furniture maker, property manager, and swim coach to kindergarteners.

Although his natural habitat is to be out of the spotlight, it’s hard to ignore his attention to detail. With just over two years working for Michael Robbins, he can be found sanding, finishing, and weaving leather.

In addition, Stu is a farmer and jointly owns Reclamation Herb Farm where he and his wife Michelle grow medicinal herbs. He is actively working on becoming a pitmaster, is pretty OK at bikes, and probably owns too many jackets.

  • Mark Sheffer

    BUILDER

Mark’s eye for furniture design reveals itself daily through visible and steady development in his work. Over the last year and a half at Michael Robbins, his curiosity, teachability, and eagerness to learn remains unwavering. There’s no denying that his love of cycling, appreciation for nature, and sense of adventure are major contributors to his maturity as a craftsman.
